I thought about using Fire for my F word today, as it, along with retirement, is this months blogging theme. Instead, I’m choosing Fun. In the aftermath of the Marshall Fire, and following many years of working, first as a family physician, then as a therapist specializing in trauma, both fascinating and intense occupations, I’m ready for some fun. It is indeed time to adjust my focus.
What is fun? From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary:
Synonyms: delight, distraction, diversion, divertissement, entertainment, pleasure, recreation.
Yep, I’m okay with fun. Of course, there remain all manner of things in life that are necessary to attend to that don’t come under the heading of fun, and at the same time, I’d like to use fun as a guideline in choice making and directing my attention in this new phase of my life.
This morning’s fun included sleeping until I was ready to get up (still before 7, but that’s just me), taking my time drinking my coffee, reading the paper, checking email, etc. Now I’ve attended to a few details that needed to be done. Choosing my own order of pacing and timing is fun. I’ve also researched other nearby areas for being out in nature, seeing migratory and resident birds, and getting a walk in. Owing to the fires, most of my “regular” spots are closed for protection or restoration. So I’m exploring.
Standley Lake regional park and nature center, here I come! Its time for fun!

I’m so glad you are enjoying the fun of being retired! I actually saw another fire headline yesterday, and thought of you — so stay safe!

Yes, there was a teeny fire yesterday very near the NCAR fire site. Fortunately there were firefighters monitoring the NCAR site in the wind and so they were able to extinguish the new fire very quickly. Less than an acre burned.

Two good things happen after a big fire. People are more aware of the danger and stuff grows. ❤

Indeed. It was a good visit. Rather colder and windier than anticipated. Interesting rookery island. Mostly cormorants and herons

Retirement is doing what you want, when you want, and for how long you want! My findings on my grounded theory doctoral dissertation over 30 years ago. Still true and how wonderful it is.

Garry can literally sleep until dinner time, but I haul him out of bed usually well before that. I think he needs mental stimulation, not 22 hours of sleep in one go. Today was his 80th birthday, so he got up early to collect phone calls and other well wishes. His idea of fun is watching old movies and sleeping, but I figure he also needs to keep his mind active. It’s a partnership, after all.

I also slept in until I naturally work up and it was before 7 too haha! Then had some fun test driving some cars this morning. Which really was the highlight of my day.
