Superstitious or Auspicious?

There are many superstitions in the world, vastly more than any one person can know. Friday the 13th being bad luck is a common one, and many consider the number 13 unlucky, enough so that some skyscrapers actually do not have a 13th floor.

As it turns out, I was born on the 13th day of the month, so I’ve been faced with this issue all of my life. I’ve decided that 13 is a lucky day. When you turn 13 on Friday the 13th, you’ve got to do something. I recall thinking that was pretty cool, and adding to the coolness was the premiere of a new network program, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., starring Stefanie Powers. Despite the inherent sexism of the title (this was 1968), having a star with my first name debuting a new show on my 13th birthday felt auspicious to me.

I guess I was a bit superstitious after all.  Lucy the black cat says its all good luck.

May today bring good health and healing to us all. Cheers!

  1. 13 is my lucky number; my brother was born on a Friday the 13th and I was married on the 13th and my son’s birthday is the 13th! All good things happen on the 13th!!

  2. I loved watching the Girl from UNCLE growing up too. Interesting thing is in Japan 13 is not a bad luck number but 4 is. So in America, some hotels don’t have a 13th floor but in Japan hotels don’t have a 4th floor sometimes. So what number is good or bad luck depends on what culture you were raised in.

  3. I know its a contradiction, but my approach is “it’s unlucky to be superstitious” 😀 There seems to be far more negative superstitions than positive ones! The only one I can think of that makes a lot of sense to me is don’t walk underneath ladders, but that would be more for practical safety rather than the superstitious element.
